The Myth Machine

Tim McCann
WRITER/DIRECTORTim McCann has directed four critically acclaimed independent feature films. His work is noted for having a “dramatic intensity laced with black humor.” Desolation Angels (1997), won the International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI) at the Toronto Film Festival, the Merchant Ivory/Kodak Award at the Telluride Film Festival, and was Critic’s Choice at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. With directors Jonathan Demme and Barbet Schroeder presenting, Desolation Angels drew critical acclaim in its limited theatrical release, and landed on several “best films of the year” lists (Village Voice, Chicago Reader). Revolution #9 (2002), McCann’s second feature, premiered at the 2001 Telluride and Toronto film festivals, where critic Roger Ebert praised it as one of the best films at each festival, calling it “brave” and “utterly absorbing”. Variety reviewed the film as “a highly assured, ambitious pic…located somewhere between the loopy fantasy of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome and the harsh sterility of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest… McCann’s instinctive camera-eye burnishes nearly every exchange with a Cassavetes dynamism.” Revolution #9 won the Grand Jury Award at the 2002 Nantucket Film Festival, a Special Jury Award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina, and the 2003 Media Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) for its accurate depiction of schizophrenia. Upon release, A.O. Scott of the New York Times praised the film, declaring “We need movies like Tim McCann’s Revolution No.9”. The film stars Adrienne Shelly, Michael Risley, Spalding Gray, and Callie Thorne. Released in April 05 by First Run Features, McCann’s third feature, the cult noir Nowhere Man (2005), garnered further critical praise. Recently, McCann directed and produced the film Runaway for New York based production company Filbert Steps. Runaway stars Aaron Stanford, Robin Tunney, Melissa Leo and Terry Kinney. The film recently premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival, where Variety hailed it as “a slacker psycho thriller that will keep audiences off balance till the bitter end…Pic will find favor not just with fests, but with younger auds in general…Paralyzing performances.” Tim also just finished post on a TV pilot called “Deca-Dance!”, a comedy which follows the exploits of a Canadian boy band in Hollywood. McCann wrote, directed and co-created the pilot, which stars Michael Risley, Emily Proctor, Robin Tunney, and Ingo Kamer. McCann directed Barry Levinson’s Homicide: Life on the Street, working with guest stars Eric Stoltz, Joan Chen and Tate Donovan. McCann guest lectured at Ithaca College, Cornell University, The New School, and Purchase College, S.U.N.Y.
